When magazines first came about they didn't have what we would consider a cover page. They had a table of contents for their "cover page". When later magazines came out they started to use cover pages, instead of it being a picture like we have today it was the cover of a book.
When the Poster Covers came out they used mostly pictures that didn't need captions along with them , they were just there to look at and admire. Most of the Poster Covers didn't even relate to any of the stories that were published in that issue.
After Poster Covers became more detailed The Pictures Married to Type became more detailed as well. The covers had more detailed lines and colorful covers to draw the readers in more. In July 1916 issue of McClure's magazine there was both symbolism and art with some indication of what was on the inside.
Towards the end of the 20th century the magazine covers became more developed and started having words to indicate what was in that issue. The covers became more clear and the pictures were taken by cameras rather than drawings or book covers like others in the early 19th and 20th centuries.
